Examination shows that this ritornello-theme recurs at intervals in various keys, reaching a strong full-close in each, and the movement is most conveniently divided into sections concluding with these punctuation-marks.

1. Bars 1-8

Ritornello, key F major, containing the figures a, a′, b, b′ c, c′, d, e, e′ and f, in which a′, b′, c′ and e′ are sub-figures contained within larger figures. All these figures are developed independently in the sequel.

2. Bars 9-28

The four solo-instruments are introduced one at a time with a new ‘solo theme’; their entries are separated by tutti statements of the first 2 bars of the ritornello-theme. After the second solo-entry, the music swings over to the dominant key, in which the remainder of the section is given. (Compare this with the ‘false start’ of the typical mature ritornello-aria.) After the last solo entry, bars 3-8 of the ritornello-theme (i.e. that part of it which had not been used for the interventions between the solo entries) are given by the tutti, coming to a full close in the dominant key of C major.
